Roxanne

"Suzie's Journey..." A Short Story by Roxanne.

Suzie had been walking for days. She was almost out of food and had to ration it out because she didn’t know how long it would be until she got to the next town. Suzie had run away from home. She had an abusive dad who always drank and always seemed to be angry. Her mom took off when Suzie was four. Suzie doesn’t really remember her. It’s been twelve years since. She figured her mom couldn’t handle her dad anymore so she understood. It took Suzie years to understand why her mom left. Well she understands full and well.

Now here she is. Days of walking to nowhere lead her to a mountain range. The mountain had an abandoned army post and an abandoned ski resort. Suzie viewed this as a good sign. She must be getting close to civilization. She figured it would be about an hour’s worth of hiking until she made it up to the top. She’d have to settle down and find a place to rest soon because it was getting dark.

When Suzie made it to the top of the mountain the sun had already set. She decided to set up her meager campsite against some rocks and settle down for the night. She’d continue the journey in the morning.

The cold, nippy wind woke Suzie the next morning just as the sun was rising. She was glad she was at least dressed in enough layers to keep her a little warm. She took in her surroundings. There were rugged mountains in varying ranges of green, covered by clouds as white and wispy as an old man’s hair. She looked around some more and was surprised at what she saw. She stared down the mountain unbelievably.

Below was a town. It was so far away that the houses looked like toys and the cars looked like ants. Either way, she was extremely excited to be so close to an actual town. Optimistically, she started her hike down the mountain…
