KayKay. "Shadow Poem"

“Where I’m From” by KayKay
“Inspired by George Ella Lyon

“I am from a spray can
“From the smell of freedom and inspiration
“I am from the beach with the palm trees
“(bright, sand that tastes like salt)
“I am from the big waves,
“The Venice Beach
“Where everybody expresses their feelings
“And where everybody is loud and happy.

“I am from discipline and respect.
“From a big family with big hearts.
“I’m from the make-it-alls
“And the do-it-alls,
“From the belt and the stick.
“I’m from the pens and sharpies
“With strength and power
“And the big imaginations.

“I’m from Long Beach, California,
“The skinnies and the beanies.
“From the talent that I’ve achieved
“To the skills my grandfather built up in me.
“In my closet is a box of spray cans, pens, and sharpies
“Dripping paint and the smells of creativity and peace,
“A feeling of separation from my siblings
“Memories are spilled and drifting.
“I am from my own small world with big things
“Snapped before I start controlling
“Freedom released from a spray can.
