"Grow Up?"
“Shadow Write”
Inspired by Billy Collins “On Turning Ten”
The whole idea of turning eighteen makes me feel
Like I have to let go the monkey bars,
Something worse than letting someone else play with your favorite toy.
Like putting your electronics in the tech box, unable to use.
Hesitating with frustration
You tell me “everyone grows up,” and “It's time to let go,”
But I cannot, because this I once was told.
“You will regret not taking time to be young once you are old,
And it will be too late to do certain things,
Once you are grown.”
So let me be the prince of peace! the sergeant in demand!
Let me have a genie unleashed that grants wishes at my command!
Let me be Hercules! A Power Ranger with powers of my own!
Let me be King Arthur! The one who pulled Excalibur out of stone!
And when the time comes that I am too old,
to battle with "bad guys" and goons,
Then I will stop pretending, then will I be like you.
It will bore me, letting go my sticks and stones,
Because the stick that will be broken,
Is the Excalibur I now hold!
In time I will let go, and grow up with a career,
I will say goodbye to the world that I have created right here.
Farewell monsters, goons, wizards, and my feuded enemies,
I will be 18, and you will be unforgotten memories
It seems so sad, to not be a kid,
Because my imagination is where I have always lived.
Do I really have to be old?
(And even get wrinkles on my face?)
But O'well, I must go now, there is a princess I must save!
(And even get wrinkles on my face?)
But O'well, I must go now, there is a princess I must save!
