Faith's "Where I'm From" poem

Faith
"Shadow Write"
Inspired by George Ella Lyon's "Where I'm From"

I am from the coconut trees
From turtle and shark
I am from the sap off of the fruit bread tree
(very chewy, and not at all yummy)
I am from the waterfall view
The very sandy beaches
As of I remember, I wasn’t allowed to go by myself but
With my expanding mind I went anyways.

I am from laid back and mellow
From Lupe and the UNKNOWN
I’m from the good days
And the dark past,
From honesty to the ugly truth
I’m from the traditional and tropical
Where it’s not allowed to be active on the 7th day
With a garden in the front yard.

I am from the Iloilo’s and the Afusia’s
Cooked bananas and roasted pig
From the loss of my grandfather’s toe
To the lawn mower
To the moment my grandfather’s life ended
My stepfather took charge,
And my mom created two sets of bones along with life
That has brought happiness
To play with me in the sand
It is those moments that brings me back
Swimming and playing hopscotch,
2002 is when those moments turned into memories.
